This presentation is aimed mainly at dog owners, people working in shelters, novice trainers, and other professionals interested in learning how to housetrain a young puppy, or dog rescued from a shelter or situation of confinement.
The following topics will be explored in detail: physical causes of inappropriate elimination, behavioral causes of inappropriate elimination, times when your puppy is likely to need to urinate or defecate, dogs rescued from shelters or other situations of confinement,eliminating is intrinsically reinforcing, management at home, training program, fading out reinforcers.
In this webinar attendees will learn to speed up the house training process by:
1 - Using appropriate cleaning products while avoiding the ones that actually attract the puppy.
2 - Correct placing and use of puppy training pads.
3 - Using a hierarchy of reinforcers
4 - When, where and how to reinforce.
Attendees will also learn about the most common physical and behavioral causes of inappropriate elimination.They will gain awareness of the fact that elimination is intrinsically reinforcing and why. They will learn about management at home, what to do with puppies who "don't seem to get it!", and when and how to stop delivering reinforcement.
Alexandra Santos is a professional canine behavior consultant and trainer, with formal education through The Animal Care College in the U.K. where she graduated with honors for the Diploma of Advanced Canine Psychology, and through The Companion Animal Sciences Institute where she graduated with distinction for the Diploma of Advanced Dog Training.
She is the author of the books “Puppy Problems” and “Puppy and Dog Care” and has also authored and co-authored several articles for the Journal of Applied Companion Animal Behavior and for the International Institute for Applied Companion Animal Behavior. Alexandra lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal, has been a lecturer at several seminars on positive reinforcement-based training, regularly presents webinars for the Pet Professional Guild, is a professor at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias and provides individual coaching for dogs and their people..
