Webinar Description

Anxiety-related problems are on the rise, which calls for more expertise to be applied to the behavior modification programs designed to help anxious dogs.

When we talk about anxiety problems, separation anxiety/distress seems to be at the forefront. But generalized anxiety is often the primary problem from which other anxiety problems derive. This webinar explores the mechanisms and characteristics of anxiety so that trainers will be better equipped to fine-tune their protocols and make them more efficient.

We will cover topics such as anxiety negatively impacting cognitive processes; anxiety rendering a dog more sensitive to sensory input; the importance of not overwhelming an anxious brain; why anxious dogs may startle without knowing why; and much more.

Learning Objectives

  • Characteristics of general anxiety.
  • Some biological causes of anxiety.
  • How to avoid sensory overload.
  • How to make mental stimulation gradually more challenging.
  • The importance of satisfying the dog’s emotional needs.
  • Special care with dogs suffering from more than one anxiety disorder.
  • The importance of and how to give an anxious dog autonomy: Anxious dogs can’t relax until they analyze potential threats to a situation and its alternatives.
  • Some pointers for everyday situations.
