Webinar Description

We, professionals, tell puppy caregivers that they need to socialize their puppies. We also need to define and explain this instruction clearly.

  1. What does ‘socialize your puppy’ really look like?
  2. What should caregivers look for in setting up an environment or planning an outing?
  3. What should they do with their puppy during interactions?
  4. When should they guide the puppy and when should they step back?
  5. Does the caregiver need to reinforce socialization behaviors? When, how and why?
  6. What do caregivers need to know about balancing socialisation and immunisations?

This webinar will help you guide caregivers through their puppy’s socialization experiences to develop confidence, optimism, and resilience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what socializing actually means
  • Learn how to plan and set up environments.
  • Learn when a puppy needs guidance and when they need space.
  • How to reinforce behaviors during socialization

Your Presenter – Dr Jen Nesbitt-Hawes BVSc (Hons) MVSt (Wild Med) MANZCVS (Vet Behaviour)

Dr Jen graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, and a strong interest in behaviour, from Sydney University in 2001. She started work in mixed practice in Queensland and completed the CVE Postgraduate course in Veterinary Behaviour in 2003.

Her veterinary career has led her around the world, including locum work in the United Kingdom, experience with game animals in South Africa, a Masters in Wildlife Medicine (studying Orang-Utans in Sumatra) and back to small animal practice at Doyalson Animal Hospital where she practiced for six years. Dr Jen completed her Low Stress Handling certification during this time.

In 2013 she attended the Natural Encounters Contemporary Animal Training Workshop in Florida USA. In 2014, Dr Jen was accepted as a Member of the Behaviour Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Science by examination (one of less than 100 Behaviour Veterinarians in Australia/New Zealand with this qualification). This makes her a behaviour vet (not a specialist!). She has previously served as the Behaviour Chapter President.

Dr Jen has been running puppy classes since 2002, has previously competed in canine agility trials, is a member of the APDT and PPGA and acts as a moderator for the Behavioral Medicine Discussion Group Facebook forum.

Her passion for getting pets and their people off to the best start possible led her to start Pet Perspective: a business dedicated to supporting pet professionals by creating positive-reinforcement-based resources for their clients.
