The Pet Professional Guild Official Position Statement
Pet Industry Consumer Transparency, Fraudulent Marketing & Public Safety
The Foundational Imperative: Transparency, Accountability, and Safety
The Pet Professional Guild (PPG) asserts that consumer transparency, honest marketing, animal welfare, and public safety are fundamentally interdependent. Because the companion animal training, behavior, grooming, boarding, daycare, and pet care sectors operate within an unchecked regulatory vacuum—where any individual can commercially market themselves as an expert regardless of formal education, demonstrated competence, or ethical accountability—deceptive, fraudulent, and predatory practices have proliferated.
The primary mission of the Pet Professional Guild is to mobilize an international coalition of verified, competent, and ethical pet service professionals committed to establishing absolute industry transparency. PPG is dedicated to setting rigorous benchmarks for truth-in-marketing, eliminating coercive practices, and ensuring pet guardians receive unambiguous clarity regarding the operational mechanics, psychological impact, and ethical implications of all commercially available animal care tools, training equipment, and behavioral methodologies.
Defining the Standards
- Consumer Transparency and Informed Consent: The affirmative ethical and operational obligation to provide complete, unambiguous, and verifiable information prior to engagement. This includes full disclosure of training methodologies, handling mechanics, physical tools, practitioner qualifications, pricing, facility protocols, and realistic behavioral timelines. True guardian consent requires a clear understanding of potential psychological and physical fallout, ensuring consumers are never misled into subjecting their pets to negligent, coercive or aversive practices under false pretenses.
- Fraudulent and Deceptive Marketing: The deliberate or reckless misrepresentation of credentials, scientific principles, practitioner competence, or environmental conditions. This encompasses fabricating certifications, obscuring risks, offering scientifically unfounded behavioral guarantees, and employing pseudoscientific terminology or euphemistic language to mask pain, fear, or physical force. Such practices constitute deceptive commercial conduct and a breach of the fiduciary duty owed to pet guardians.
- Public Safety and Animal Welfare Protection: The fundamental responsibility to safeguard both the community and the animal from the predictable risks of behavioral fallout and physical injury. Suppressing behavior through intimidation, physical punishment, or coercive equipment elevates baseline stress, masks underlying emotional distress, and drastically increases the likelihood of defensive aggression, bite incidents, and chronic trauma. Ethical standards mandate evidence-based, humane practices that preserve behavioral integrity, uphold animal welfare frameworks, and protect public well-being.
