Webinar Description
Why do some clients follow every instruction while others seem to disappear after the first session? The difference isn’t usually the dog’s behavior—it’s the owner’s psychological buy-in. Traditional pet training relies on a “prescriptive” model: the trainer gives advice, and the owner is expected to comply. However, when owners feel judged or overwhelmed, they stop showing up.
In this webinar, we move beyond “telling” and into “coaching.” You will learn how to use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to resolve client ambivalence and spark internal drive. We will explore how Quality of Life (QoL) Assessments transform subjective feelings into objective data that proves training is working.
Crucially, we will master the art of Objective Feedback—learning how to observe and coach human movement without triggering defensiveness. Finally, we will dive into the behavioral science of Commitment Devices—practical tools that help clients automate their training habits so they stick even when willpower is low.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify and Resolve Ambivalence: Use the OARS framework to turn client resistance into “Change Talk” and internal motivation.
- Quantify Progress with QoL: Implement Quality of Life Assessments to track both human and canine well-being, providing objective evidence of success beyond simple obedience.
- Deliver Objective Feedback: Master the “Ask-Tell-Ask” model to provide technical coaching that focuses on observable behavior rather than personal judgment, reducing “human” error and frustration.
- Audit the Feedback Loop: Learn to distinguish between “subjective labels” (e.g., “you’re too slow”) and “objective observations” (e.g., “the treat was delivered two seconds after the sit”) to accelerate owner learning.
- Design Effective Commitment Devices: Assist clients in creating Implementation Intentions (If-Then plans) to ensure training becomes a frictionless habit.
