Your Webinar Description:
As pet professionals, we learn about their health and wellbeing, we study relevant theoretical subjects, and we rehearse our practical skills. But when it comes to the death of our client’s (or our own) pets, we are sometimes at a loss for what to do.
Death is a subject not often spoken about. When you talk about things, they become less scary. When things are less scary, we can talk about them more openly.
Being able to companion our clients through the difficult time of ill-health, palliative care and the time around the death of a pet should be something with which pet professionals are comfortable. This webinar is a basic introduction to these topics.
Learning Objectives:
- To help pet professionals feel more comfortable with the subject of pet death
- To help pet professionals understand normal grief and normal grieving
- To help pet professionals identify types of grievers
- To introduce pet professionals to the art of companioning, rather than being “the expert”
Your Presenters- Debra Millikan, PCT-A, PCBC-A
With 50 years of dog training experience behind her, Deb is now concentrating on helping pet professionals to feel more comfortable when talking to their clients about ill and dying pets and how to companion their clients through the death of a pet.
Having lost many pets over her lifetime, Deb could not understand why she could not get over the death of her heart dog, Mace. Being an instrumental griever, she turned her troubled mind to study and undertook a CPD certified (UK) Advanced Diploma in Pet Bereavement Counselling, the Vermont University Companion Animal End of Life Doula course and then put that knowledge to good use to write a pet bereavement course for DogNostics. Has this helped resolve her grief? Yes, but, as the title of this webinar indicates, grief is the price we pay for love and there are some things you don’t ‘get over’ but you learn to live with them.
Deb has many dog training and behavior consultation credentials, is Senior Volunteer Trainer at Canine Behavioural School in Adelaide, South Australia and runs their Aspiring Instructor Program where volunteers study and apply practical skills with the objective of gaining force and fear free credentials.
Since 2012 Deb has been involved with the Pet Professional Guild serving on the Steering Committee, various Summit committees and is currently a Board Member of PPG, the Pet Professional Accreditation Board, Doggone Safe and is a Faculty Member of DogNostics.
