Your Webinar Description:

In many cases, old and young dogs live peaceably together with no issue. However, in some cases when a younger dog is introduced into a home with a senior dog, there are issues, and a dog trainer is called in to help. For example, the younger dog might be “pestering” the retiree, or the older dog may “haze” or otherwise be inappropriate to the young dog, especially puppies. In addition, younger dogs may start to initiate fights, even after possibly years of peaceful times, when older dog starts to decline. These cases can be tricky for the dog trainer and client, as on top of the typical dog-dog training and management we might offer, there are further considerations such as the medical decline of the older dog, the special needs of socialization age puppies, and the dog guardian’s emotional reaction to such upsetting events.

This webinar will introduce the how and why of these issues, but focus on the training and management that can help senior dogs and younger dogs live peaceably together. It also includes guardian messaging that can help to secure buy-in for positive and welfare-forward approaches to these tricky issues

Learning Objectives:

  • Review typical issues between senior dogs and younger dogs that might cause our clients to reach out to a trainer,
  • Identify root causes of the various issues that arise
  • Review management options for each class of issue
  • Review training options for each class of issue
  • Discuss client-forward supportive language and approaches
  • Ensure the protection of the emotional and physical safety of senior dogs and young dogs
