One of the most challenging cases in behavior modification is working with a client and their fearful or aggressive dog around strangers in the home.

This webinar presents some of the challenges and the skills needed to successfully help clients with fearful and/or fearful-aggressive dogs become more confident and reliable when meeting strangers in their homes from the moment of taking the case history, working safely with the dog, implementing creative and practical behavior modifications plans to empower the client to make good choices for their dog as they move forward in meeting strangers in the home.

Learning Objectives

1. Taking a comprehensive history of the situation
2. Understand the typical challenges of introducing fearful or fearful-aggressive dogs to visitors to the home.
3. How to identify the dog’s specific triggers when visitors are present.
4. Evaluate the most suitable and safe options for managing the dog when visitors are expected.
5. Evaluate options for introducing the dog to guests from a safety and behavior modification standpoint.
6. Assess the dog’s body language and stress response when interacting with a visitor.
7. How to keep everyone safe.
8. Establish safe protocols as “blueprints” for the owner and the dog to build the dog’s confidence in meeting new people at their home.

 

Your Presenters- Almudena Ortiz Cué

Almudena Ortiz Cué (she/her) is a graduate of the renowned San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers (CTC), a Certified Professional Dog Trainer by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), Certified Canine Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCC) by the North Carolina State Collefe of Veterinary Medicine, a professional member of The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), and the owner of C.H.A.C.O. Dog Training & Behavior Consulting, LLC located in Tesuque, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, where she works with private clients consulting on a myriad of behavior issues. She has a special interest in working with Emotionally Sensitive dogs, those that suffer from fear, anxiety, and aggression.

Almudena was a staff trainer (2017-2019) at the Tony La Russa Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) in Walnut Creek, CA, where she worked with under-socialized dogs who had experienced lengthy shelter stays or scored poorly on the SAFER test.  She utilized training designed to improve the lives of the dogs while they were at the shelter and to prepare them for successful adoptions. She also designed and implemented the shelter’s first Dog Training Internship Program (Dog TIP).
