Your Webinar Description:

Service dog work is rarely linear. At some point, many handlers must plan for a successor dog, support a current dog through retirement, or navigate the difficult decision to career-change a prospect or working partner. These transitions are not only emotionally complex, but they also involve significant investments of time, money, and energy, which are limited resources for people with disabilities.

Drawing from my work as a certified service dog trainer and facilitator, with over a decade of experience in the field of service dogs, as well as my lived experience as a long-time service dog handler, this webinar will explore successor dogs, retirement, and career changes through a compassionate, ethical, and real-world lens. We’ll discuss how to recognize when a dog may be physically aging, experiencing health limitations, or communicating that working is no longer comfortable for them; how these factors influence the timing of a successor dog; and how to thoughtfully support a dog into retirement. Time will also be intentionally set aside for discussion and questions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the emotional, financial, and energy-related realities of successor dogs, retirement, and career changes
  • Recognize signs that a dog may be aging, experiencing health challenges, or expressing that work is no longer comfortable or sustainable
  • Explore how the timing for a successor dog can differ greatly depending on the dog and team
  • Learn ethical, compassionate ways to transition a working dog into retirement
  • Identify proactive steps that can reduce unnecessary career changes by supporting both dog and handler early
  • Engage in open discussion around these transitions without blame or failure narratives

Your Presenters- Melanie Wonneberger

Melanie Wonneberger is the founder of REAL K9 Training™ (Reward-based Ethically Aligned Learning) on Colorado’s Western Slope. She is a certified service dog trainer through Atlas Assistant Dogs, an Atlas Team Facilitator, a CPDT-KA, and a Fear Free Certified Professional.

With over a decade of experience in the field of service dogs, Melanie brings both professional expertise and lived perspective to her work. She has supported service dog teams across all stages of development, including puppy raising and socialization, foundation skills, public access training, advanced task work, day training and board-and-train style programs, as well as private sessions, group classes, and service dog–specific workshops. Her work includes long-term collaboration with nonprofit service dog organizations and supporting teams both locally and nationwide.

Melanie has also been a service dog handler for over ten years and has personally navigated successor dogs, retirement decisions, and team transitions alongside many clients. This dual perspective deeply informs her approach to supporting handlers through complex decisions that involve time, finances, energy, and disability-related realities.

In addition to service dog work, Melanie specializes in supporting dogs with “big emotions,” using ethical, force-free, welfare-centered methods. Her work centers on balancing handler needs with the dog’s long-term welfare, particularly when decisions are complex or emotionally difficult.
