The Enriched Puppy Protocol™: Raising Competent, Coordinated & Connected Canines with Suzanne Clothier

The Enriched Puppy Protocol™ (EPP) incorporates concepts drawn from a wide range of research, practical experience with my breeding program (11 generations German Shepherd Dogs), with breeders, rescues and shelters, and as a consultant for multiple guide and service dog schools.

The goal of EPP is the development of a physically, mentally and emotionally balanced puppy who can best utilize his genetic potential. Specifically, the goal is what Vincent (1968) termed “emotional homeostasis” defined as: . . . neurophysiological stability, in a varying environment, equipping it with an independent capacity to cope and adapt. In short, EPP is dedicated to creating the very underpinnings of resilience.

It is well established that early experiences have a profound, often permanent impact on the developing animal. Unfortunately, this developmental period is poorly understood by many who are responsible for raising litters. Countless puppies receive inadequate support and experiences that cannot be overcome simply by “socialization” efforts after placement. The long-term effects across the dog’s lifetime can be profound.

The Enriched Puppy Protocol™ focuses on the first 63 days of life, an age range that includes critical and sensitive periods. EPP provides age-appropriate stimuli and challenges to provide an extensive “reference library” for the puppy. An enriched, safe environment combined with individual socialization promotes confidence, coordination and competence, and builds a neurobiological foundation for resilience.

The effort needed to support developing puppies is considerable.
