Understanding Resource Guarding with Dr. Mayuri Billingsley

Resource guarding dogs are often only brought to trainers when the dogs start showing aggression. Resource guarding has the potential to spread quickly and escalate dramatically. RG-related aggression is a major factor in relinquishment and behavioral euthanasia of dogs. Are these dogs just wired wrong? Is it heritable? Can pet guardians’ actions cause resource guarding? How does the environment and the dog’s health play into all of this?
This webinar will look at all sources and causes of resource guarding behaviors. We will also dive into the main influences and concepts that must be addressed to resolve resource guarding and why contemporary approaches often plateau in progress and understand how simple actions can prevent resource guarding in puppies and dogs that do not currently resource guard. While it may seem like a challenging behavior problem, it can sometimes be simpler to manage and resolve compared to other types of aggression.

Your Presenters- Dr. Mayuri Billingsley
Dr. Mayuri Billingsley, DDS, MS Head of R&D and Clinical Affairs at Bay Materials, Straumann group. Dr. Mayuri Billingsley is an IAABC Certified Dog Behavior Consultant and Accredited Dog Trainer based in Northern California. She specializes in helping dogs that fight, bite, are fearful, shutdown or have difficulty coping with their world. She is experienced with complex behavioral cases including dog-directed, animal-directed, human-directed aggression, resource guarding, prey drive, former street/stray dog rehabilitation, handling issues (grooming, vet visits) and service dog training. All training is done using food, toys, games and play. Mayuri grew up around and lived with free-ranging village and street dogs in India for 30 years and has a deep understanding of working with them. She works online through her business DoggEd LLC and has clients across the US and around the world. As a dentist and biomedical engineer, Mayuri is passionate about translating animal behavior science and research into actionable training that dogs and guardians enjoy
